Four distinctions that prevent wrong assumptions

Cover comes from the policy

Cancellation, baggage and assistance are labels, not promises. Named events, insured people, territory, duration, exclusions, deductibles and limits must be read in the policy.

Basic health insurance is not complete travel cover

The FOPH distinguishes the EU/EFTA or UK from other countries. The European card and compulsory insurance do not automatically settle every medical cost, transport or repatriation.

The carrier and insurer have different roles

Flight or baggage disruption is first reported to the carrier. A private insurer may then ask for that record and assess remaining expenses under the contract.

Assistance is not a blanket payment promise

An assistance service may guide and organise. Still clarify who authorises a service, who advances costs and what evidence is required.

Build protection in layers

Start with the real trip, then check existing protection before adding private cover.

  1. Describe the trip

Record countries, connections, dates, travellers, activities, transport and non-refundable bookings.

  2. Inventory existing protection

Check health, accident, payment-card, carrier rights and current policies separately; do not assume benefits stack.

  3. Read triggers and exclusions

Compare named events, start date, exclusions, notification duties and any prior-authorisation requirement.

  4. Prepare contacts

Keep the policy, assistance, insurers, carriers and bookings available offline; Travel Admin complements security preparation.

What this dossier cannot establish

  • No benefit is confirmed without reviewing the policy applicable to the trip and event.
  • FDFA travel advice describes security risk; on its own it does not decide cancellation cover.
  • In a medical emergency, safety and local emergency instructions take priority over administration.

Start with the trip you are planning

Document the future journey, then check terms and contacts before departure.

This block asks for no personal information.

Each source language is stated. The FDFA, FOPH and FOCA publish authority information; Fedlex contains federal law. The detailed FOCA baggage source falls back to French because no equivalent English detail page was available when checked. The English Fedlex text is a reference translation; the German, French and Italian legal texts and the applicable policy control.
