Swiss car-insurance dossier
Car insurance: separate legal duty, policy and procedure
Car insurance is more than a premium. This dossier separates the liability cover required before driving, casco selected by contract, cantonal vehicle registration and the different steps that follow an accident or a change of insurer.

These four steps keep the statutory baseline, contractual options and administrative work distinct.
Compulsory motor liability and vehicle registration
Motor liability primarily protects injured third parties and is a condition of vehicle admission. Federal law provides the baseline, the insurer supplies evidence and the cantonal office carries out the registration procedure.
Read the guide Cover for the insured vehiclePartial or full casco: begin with the wording
The law requires motor liability, not a uniform casco package. Partial and full casco help organise products, but only the policy, conditions and definitions show which events affecting the insured vehicle were actually agreed.
Read the guide After a road eventRoad accident: secure, document and notify
After an accident, the safety of people and traffic comes first. Facts are then documented and passed on under the law, policy and insurer’s requests, without turning an initial description into an admission or a final finding of liability.
Read the guide Contract and administrative continuityChange or terminate a car-insurance policy
Changing insurer links two separate files: ending or adjusting the current contract on a valid ground and timeline, and maintaining liability evidence that fits the vehicle registration. Receiving a quotation is not the same as completing termination.
Read the guideFour anchors before comparing
Motor liability is a legal requirement
The Road Traffic Act does not allow a motor vehicle onto public roads until the prescribed third-party liability insurance is in place.
Casco is primarily contractual
Partial and full casco are common categories, but insured events, exclusions, deductibles and valuation must be read in the offer and policy terms.
Admission to traffic remains cantonal
Insurance data is exchanged through the federal admission system, while the cantonal office handles the vehicle registration document and plates.
Accidents and policy changes have different sequences
Safety, factual recording and claim notice concern the event; termination, a new certificate and cantonal updates concern future insurance.
Use the dossier in a sound order
These four steps keep the statutory baseline, contractual options and administrative work distinct.
Identify the vehicle and its use
Record holder, canton, use, declared drivers, finance and first registration without inferring cover from those facts.
Check the liability baseline
Confirm the contracting insurer, the certificate data and coordination with the cantonal office before the vehicle is used.
Read each optional benefit
Compare definitions, events, exclusions, deductible, valuation and duties after loss in the actual policy documents.
Prepare for future events
Keep useful contacts and record the accident process, contract dates and change formalities as separate checklists.
What this dossier cannot decide
- A product category by itself does not prove that a particular loss is insured.
- Documents, charges and administrative timing must be checked with the competent cantonal road-traffic office.
- A comparison for future insurance changes neither the policy applying to an earlier accident nor the liability of those involved.
Start with the compulsory baseline
Read how liability, the insurance certificate and registration connect, then describe future insurance needs separately.
