Three points before comparing

Your belongings and third-party losses are different risks

Damage to your own property may fall under contents cover if the event is insured. A third-party loss requires an assessment of liability and then of the liability policy.

The policy defines actual cover

Sum insured, deductible, people, locations, events and exclusions must be read separately. A product name does not establish entitlement.

Fire and natural-hazard rules may have cantonal features

Federal rules include a special natural-hazard framework and some cantons operate their own systems. A cantonal rule must not be generalised nationwide.

Which question comes first?

Start with the person or property affected, then identify the cause.

  1. Your property is damaged or stolen

Check the item, location, event, sum and deductible under contents cover.

  2. A third party seeks compensation

Record the facts without automatically accepting liability, then notify the liability insurer.

  3. The loss concerns rented housing

Separate pre-existing defects, contract-compliant wear, notification duties and potentially attributable tenant damage.

  4. An event has just happened

Protect people, take reasonable mitigation measures, preserve evidence and contact the insurer promptly.

What this hub cannot decide

  • There is no automatic “covered” or “not covered” answer without the policy, facts and evidence.
  • Personal liability is generally optional in Switzerland, although a landlord or specific cantonal rule may require evidence in a particular context.
  • This content is not a quote, tariff, payment promise or individual legal opinion.

Start with the essential distinction

First decide whether you need to protect belongings or assets against third-party claims.
