Understand the covers

Household contents or personal liability: two different jobs

A combined product can look like one protection. In reality it answers two questions: what property was harmed, and who may be legally responsible?

Each source shows its original language. Summaries separate legislation, authority guidance and contract-specific conditions; English Fedlex translations are references and official-language wording controls.

The practical difference

Contents: your property against defined events

Cover commonly concerns household inventory for listed events such as fire, natural hazards, water or burglary. The policy wording remains decisive.

Liability: certain consequences of harm to others

Where liability is established, personal liability may cover bodily injury, property loss and consequential financial loss, and defend unjustified claims.

One event may involve several contracts

A water incident can affect your belongings, the building and a neighbouring flat. These interests need not sit under the same policy.

Read the case in the right order

Start with facts, not the product name.

  1. Who or what was affected?

Separate your property, rented property, the building, and third-party people or property.

  2. What caused the loss?

Fire, water, theft, a fall and an accident follow different clauses.

  3. Is liability alleged?

A third-party demand alone does not prove established liability.

  4. What does the policy say?

Check people, locations, sum, deductible, exclusions and optional extensions.

Claims to avoid

  • Contents insurance does not cover everything kept at home in every circumstance.
  • Personal liability does not automatically pay every third-party demand.
  • FINMA supervision is not a public quality label for each policy or term.
