Inventory and sum insured: document before a loss

A useful inventory is not an approximate list made after a loss. It records belongings room by room, retains evidence and supports a discussion with the insurer without predicting compensation.

Each source shows its original language. Summaries separate legislation, authority guidance and contract-specific conditions; English Fedlex translations are references and official-language wording controls.

What an inventory should show

Ordinary categories and special items

Furniture, clothing, electronics, leisure items, cellars and outbuildings may need separate categories. Valuables and business property may have special limits.

A verifiable trail

Dated photos, invoices, serial numbers or valuations can identify property. Evidence alone does not guarantee cover or an amount.

Updates after material change

Moving, a new household, a major purchase, home working or external storage may change what should be disclosed and reviewed.

Build a usable record

The aim is traceability, not artificial precision.

  1. Work room by room

Record categories and significant items, including cellar, garage and storage.

  2. Attach available evidence

Add photos and invoices without inventing missing dates or values.

  3. Flag special clauses

Check category limits, valuables, third-party property, business use and cover away from home.

  4. Compare against the policy

Seek written clarification if a definition, location or valuation method is unclear.

Limits of an estimate

  • The sum insured is not automatically paid in full after a loss.
  • Purchase price, current value and replacement value are not interchangeable; the policy sets the method.
  • A generic calculator cannot guarantee full insurance or acceptance of a special item.
