After an event

Household or liability claim: act without losing useful information

Safety comes first. Next come reasonable mitigation, prompt notice and preserving the facts. These steps do not decide liability or insurance cover.

Keep the duties separate

Prompt claim notice

The ICA requires notice when the entitled person knows of the event and the resulting insurance right. The policy may specify form and channel.

Reasonable mitigation

Do what is possible to avoid worsening the loss and, outside an emergency, seek insurer instructions. Personal safety remains the priority.

Information and records

The insurer may request known facts and accessible documents. Answer accurately, separate observation from assumption and retain copies.

A simple chronology

Record time, apparent cause, action taken and contacts.

  1. Secure and alert

Call emergency services or the competent authority when needed and avoid further danger.

  2. Mitigate without erasing evidence

Take safe urgent action, photograph if possible and keep replaced parts when safe.

  3. Notify the insurer

Use the required channel, state facts without speculation and request the file number and instructions.

  4. Keep a claim journal

Organise inventory, invoices, reports, decisions and follow-up dates.

Do not confuse deadlines and remedies

  • The ICA’s general five-year limitation period does not permit waiting five years to notify the loss.
  • FINMA supervises insurers and reviews indications of irregularity, but does not decide a private dispute or promise payment.
  • A FINMA report or mediation must not be described as automatically pausing a legal or contractual deadline.

Future cover only

Compare for future insurance needs

A new comparison does not change the policy that applies to a loss that has already happened and does not guarantee payment. It is only for preparing future cover.
