Cross-border commuter hub
Health insurance for cross-border commuters: decide in the right order
Residence alone does not determine the applicable system. Place of work, nationality, professional and family situation, and coordination rules must be checked before any application.
Choose the question you need to resolve
Treat legal responsibility, procedure, official premium and access to care as separate decisions.
The option right: check first, choose second
The option right is a regulated legal possibility, not a free commercial choice between policies. The responsible state must be identified before any formal exemption process.

Where the France–Switzerland option applies, the choice must be documented with the official form. Comparing contributions alone does not complete the process.

People insured in Switzerland but resident in the EU, EFTA or UK have dedicated premium tables. A standard Swiss cantonal premium may therefore be irrelevant.

Swiss employment is the starting point
For many EU, EFTA or UK cross-border employees, Swiss insurance becomes compulsory when work starts in Switzerland, subject to applicable coordination rules.
The option right is not universal
It depends on the country of residence and status. Where an exemption is available, a formal request must be filed with the authority in the canton of employment.
The deadline matters
FOPH generally states three months from the start of the obligation to affiliate or file the required request.
Choose the question you need to resolve
