What the references support
Insurance before use on public roads
The Road Traffic Act requires the prescribed liability insurance before public-road use and generally gives an injured party a direct claim against the insurer.
Insurance evidence reaches the authority
The insurer issues the certificate and admission systems allow the relevant information to be exchanged with the competent public office.
Cantonal decision and documentation
Cantonal offices manage admission, registration documents, plates and withdrawal; their current document list must be consulted directly.
Prepare registration without shortcuts
The exact sequence depends on the canton and vehicle situation, but these four checks remain useful.
Check the contracting entity
Confirm the insurer’s identity and read the proposal; authorisation is neither a quality assessment nor personal advice.
Request the matching certificate
Provide accurate holder and vehicle data so that the insurance evidence corresponds to the cantonal file.
Read the cantonal requirements
Check originals, inspections, plates, appointments and any additional formalities on the competent office’s own page.
Wait for admission confirmation
Do not treat transmission of insurance evidence as the final authorisation to put the vehicle on the road.
Limits that must stay visible
- Motor liability does not describe damage to the insured vehicle; separate contract terms must be checked.
- A procedure published by one canton must not be presented as identical across every canton.
- An insurer’s presence in a register does not show that a specific offer fits an individual situation.
Checked public and sector references
Each reference states its language. Fedlex, FEDRO and FINMA are kept separate from the SIA/SVV, which supplies sector context only; the applicable official-language law and the individual policy remain controlling.
