Birth and LAMal enrolment

Insure a newborn: the three-month reference date

Each child is insured individually. In the ordinary Swiss case, parents have three months after birth to enrol the child in compulsory healthcare insurance; the calculator gives a practical reference only and does not decide an international case.

Insure a newborn: the three-month reference date

LAMal reference for newborns

Calculate the three-month reference date

Enter only the general situation and actual date of birth. The calculation adds three calendar months; it does not confirm the legal deadline in an individual case or the child’s enrolment.
General situation

The ordinary calculation is for a birth in Switzerland subject to Swiss compulsory insurance.

Information needed

Select the situation and enter the actual date of birth.

General information without a coverage decision or legal advice. The insurer and, where relevant, the canton confirm enrolment.

What to separate from birth

Compulsory basic insurance

The basic insurer must accept the child regardless of age or health, without a reservation, waiting period or health questionnaire.

Retroactive cover and premiums

When enrolment occurs within the legal period, cover and premiums apply retroactively from birth; ask for written confirmation of the recorded date.

Supplementary insurance is separate

Supplementary cover is a separate private contract; the insurer may ask health questions, impose reservations or refuse admission. It is not LAMal basic insurance.

Prepare enrolment without sending health data

Use the actual civil date, select an authorised basic insurer and keep evidence of the application.

  1. Compulsory basic insurance

Start with the relevant document or need. The basic insurer must accept the child regardless of age or health, without a reservation, waiting period or health questionnaire.

  2. Retroactive cover and premiums

Compare only like-for-like items. When enrolment occurs within the legal period, cover and premiums apply retroactively from birth; ask for written confirmation of the recorded date.

  3. Supplementary insurance is separate

Ask for written confirmation when the actual case requires a decision. Supplementary cover is a separate private contract; the insurer may ask health questions, impose reservations or refuse admission. It is not LAMal basic insurance.

  4. Keep evidence

Archive documents, versions, dated dispatches and replies. A tool or comparison request does not suspend a deadline stated in a decision or contract.

Limits to keep in mind

  • The calculated reference does not decide the applicable insurance system in an international case, whether a delay is excusable or the legally recognised enrolment date.
  • This general information does not replace an authority’s decision, the policy or the insurer’s terms.
  • ClairAssur does not guarantee a premium, acceptance, cover, reimbursement or outcome.
  • Do not enter a diagnosis, treatment, medical record or any other health data in the comparison form.
