New to Switzerland
Check insurance in the right order.
This checklist organises only steps confirmed by federal sources. It cannot decide whether an exception applies and does not replace the cantonal authority, an insurer or individual advice.
Compulsory health insurance: the general deadline is three months
A person taking up residence in Switzerland must generally obtain compulsory healthcare insurance no later than three months after taking up residence. The same deadline runs from birth for a newborn child.
- When enrolment is completed on time, insurance takes effect from the date residence was taken up or from birth, and premiums are due retroactively from that date.
- With late enrolment, cover starts only when enrolment occurs; a premium surcharge may apply when the delay is not excusable.
- International coordination rules and certain statuses can change which system applies. An exemption requiring an application is valid only after the competent authority decides.
How to use this page
- Start with the compulsory health-insurance rule and its reference date. Do not delay enrolment while comparing optional contracts.
- Then handle only situations that apply and open the official source before acting.
- Checkboxes are a temporary reminder. A tick is neither an administrative decision nor proof of cover.
Important limits
- This page does not determine which system covers you or whether you qualify for an exemption or premium reduction.
- It compares no prices, benefits or policies.
- It provides no personalised legal, tax, medical or insurance advice.
- Cantonal, international and contractual rules must be checked with the competent body.
